CHAPTER 15

“May I speak with Sheriff Connor?” Jeff asked the woman who answered the phone at the Dixon County, Arkansas Sheriff’s office.

“Certainly, may I tell him who’s calling?” she asked.

“Yes, this is Detective Combs with the Palm Springs, California Police Department returning his call.”

A moment later a male voice came on the line and said, “Good afternoon, Detective, how are you?”

“Trying to solve a murder case and finding a lot of loose threads, but I’m sure not able to make much of them. Hope you have something for me.”

“Yes and no. I personally went out to the little house where Luke Lindsay lives, but he wasn’t there. There aren’t any neighbors nearby, so I decided to see if the door was open. I figured if it was open, I wasn’t really breaking and entering, and down in these parts, in an area like where he lives, most everybody leaves their door unlocked. Matter of fact, his door didn’t even have a lock on it.”

“Did you find anything of interest?” Jeff asked.

“Not really. It’s more of a two-room shack than a house. Doesn’t have any running water or electricity. I looked on the clothes rack in what I assume is his bedroom, at least it had a bed in it, and there was only one shirt. From that I thought he might have gone somewhere.

“I went into town and talked to the country store owner who knew Luke. He told me that he’s a real loser. Said from time to time he gets some money and comes to the store to buy cigarettes and a bottle of whiskey, but the rest of the time he lives on what he grows on his land. He told me Luke had a couple of chickens, but I didn’t see them.”

“Kind of hard to believe in this day and age and particularly when his brother, the decedent, was one of the most respected people in the financial world. When I hear something like that about two people raised in the same household, I just wonder what made each of them turn out like they did.” Jeff said.

“I agree. The store owner told me Luke left town a few days ago on a bus that comes to town twice a week. It stops at the country store, so the manager had a chance to talk to Luke before it came. Luke said he was going to visit his rich brother in California.”

“That’s interesting. Anything else?”

“No, but that would fit with the meager amount of clothing I saw in the shack. Looks like he went to California, and I’m probably thinking the same thing you’re thinking. Sure is coincidental that his brother was murdered a few days later in California.”

“That’s exactly what I’m thinking, but trying to find him would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. I have no idea what he even looks like. And there sure isn’t a smoking gun here,” Jeff said.

“Detective, I have another call I need to take. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but at least you have a little more information to go on.
